Motorist party no 'single issue group'

Posted September 10, 2008 13:05:00

The Australian Motorists Party (AMP) says it has comprehensive policies it will take to the ACT electorate.

The AMP has named six candidates for the October poll.

Andrew Simmington and Denis Walford will stand in Ginninderra, David Cumbers and Joe Hlubucek in Molonglo and Geoff Rake and Burl Doble in Brindabella.

Denis Walford says that while a speedway is high on the agenda, the party is more than a single issue group.

"We are about other issues and this government is not looking after particularly our young people, our kids, young kids going to school," he said.

"One of our policies is immediately to install flashing lights in schools, which this government has blatantly denied the opportunity for this to happen."

Mr Walford says the party would spend more on roads, driver training and the bus network as well as recreational facilities for motorists including a dragway.

But he says they have ruled out support for a light rail network in Canberra.

"Eighty-five per cent of people use their cars everyday, there is no room for another transport system except for the bus system that we have," he said.

"As far as rail and light rail and those sort of things, they just would not be cost effective."

Mr Walford says the party also has a climate change strategy.

"We want to see hybrid vehicles become more commonplace, reductions in registration in those areas and an incentive system," he said.
