A manager at the Beaconsfield Gold mine says history shows longer bolts should have been installed before a fatal rockfall more than two years ago.

Beaconsfield's chief geologist Peter Hills is giving evidence at the inquest into the death of miner Larry Knight in a rockfall on Anzac Day 2006.

Mr Hills said that after rockfalls the previous year, he spent a lot of time consulting experts and doing models on what bolts the mine should use to support the rock.

He said that up until one minute before the rockfall that killed Mr Knight, he thought the bolts recommended by experts were the right length, although history would prove him wrong.

Mr Hills will continue his evidence today.
