Two earthquakes have struck at about the same time, one in Japan, the other in Indonesia.

The Japanese quake struck off Hokkaido, the main northern island and was strong enough for Japan's Meteorological Agency to warn of mild tsunami seismic waves.

The Indonesian quake struck the Maluku islands in the east.

Rated 7.6 in magnitude earthquake, it happened at a depth of 10 kilometres, 122 kilometres north-west of Ternate city in North Maluku province, the country's meteorology and geophysics bureau said.

Indonesian authorities briefly issued a tsunami warning, which was later withdrawn.

There are no reports of damage or casualties from either quake.
