Police have charged a man and a woman with neglecting eight children in the New South Wales Blue Mountains.

Police say they went to a home on Tuesday after they were contacted with concerns that a group of children between three and 15-years-old were living unsupervised and without food or warm clothing.

It is believed the children had been living in that condition for up to two weeks.

The children were removed and are being looked after by the Department of Community Services.

Today police arrested a 32-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man after they went to a government agency.

The pair were questioned throughout the afternoon at Katoomba Police Station.

Officers charged both people with 16 offences, including abandoning or exposing a child under seven-years-old and child neglect.

They have been conditionally bailed to appear in Katoomba Local Court next month.
