Be aware of signs leading to stroke:Giddings

Posted September 14, 2008 10:24:00

Tasmanians are being urged to be aware of the warning signs of stroke, the nation's second biggest killer.

National stroke week was launched in Hobart yesterday, with a focus on raising awareness of key signs of the disease.

Tasmania's Health Minister Lara Giddings, says speech difficulties, facial and arm weakness are among those indicators.

She says the past 12 months have seen a six per cent increase in demand for stroke services in Tasmania.

"The thing about stroke to remember is its not just about the ageing population here," Ms Giddings said.

"Stroke can affect anyone of any age and you need to look after your health and well being, you should look after your physical activity, keep fit and make sure that you don't end up with high blood pressure because that can help bring on a stroke as well," she said.
