Man charged over Surry Hills assault

Police say they have charged a man over an assault outside a fast food restaurant in Surry Hills in inner Sydney over the weekend.

Police say a 21-year-old man made an offensive comment to the another man who was standing outside the restaurant on Oxford Street before climbing out of his car and allegedly punching him in the head at about 6:00am AEST on Sunday morning.

The punch allegedly knocked the man to the ground so that his head struck the footpath, knocking him unconscious.

Police say the 21-year-old then got back in his car and and fled the scene west along Oxford Street.

The alleged victim was taken to St Vincent's Hospital and placed in an induced coma. He is in a stable condition.

Police arrested a 21-year-old Umina man at Kurnell yesterday.

He was taken to Miranda Police Station and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He has been refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court today.
