UK women busted with drugs in wigs

Posted September 17, 2008 01:33:00

Two British women have been arrested trying to board a plane in Jamaica with drugs hidden in wigs they were wearing, British customs officials said.

The women, aged 17 and 20, were attempting to board a flight to London when British customs officers found 2.27 kilograms of cocaine, worth 175,000 pounds ($395,000) stitched into their wigs.

Customs officials said the women, from the Derby area, had been on holiday in Jamaica for two weeks and told police they were paid 4,000 pounds ($9,000) to smuggle the drugs into Britain.

Under Operation Airbridge, launched in 2002, British and Jamaican authorities work together to try to catch drug couriers before they board flights to Britain.
