Opposition questions injured triathlete ambulance delay

The State Opposition wants the Government to explain why it took so long for an injured triathlete to be treated after a serious accident in north Queensland on the weekend.

Chris Rawling was competing in the Airlie Beach Triathlon on Sunday morning when he was hit by a cyclist.

Mr Rawling suffered a broken jaw and back injuries.

Opposition emergency services spokesman Ted Malone says it took 20 minutes for an ambulance to arrive at the scene, which is unacceptable.

"It is a tourist area, a very substantial urban area and quite frankly the 20-minute wait is quite unacceptable under the circumstances," he said.

"But more unacceptable is the fact that the paramedics that did arrive weren't in a position to administer pain relief."

The Queensland Ambulance Service has been unavailable to comment.
