A couple accused of neglecting six young children at a home in western Sydney' have been ordered not to contact them except in the company of child protection officers.

The 23-year-old woman and 29-year-old man, who cannot be named, appeared briefly in Mount Druitt Local Court this morning, three weeks after police allegedly found four children locked out on a balcony at a home in Bidwill.

Two other children were found inside the house.

The parents have been charged with neglecting all six. The man is also charged with possessing 16 grams of cannabis.

Their lawyer sought an adjournment saying he needed more time because of the "enormity" of the police allegations against the couple.

They will face court again on October 14.
