The Mayor of the Port Adelaide Enfield Council says he is pleased a State Government assessment board has knocked back the third stage of the Newport Quays development.

The three buildings are a significant part of the multi-million dollar development, which also includes a marina and office space.

Mayor Gary Johanson says it is a good opportunity for the council to work closely with the developers on a new design.

"We'll need to work closely to get it right, to ensure the long-term viability not just for the people of Port Adelaide Enfield and Port Adelaide but also for the developers," he said.

"It will give us a chance to work closely with the developers Newport Quays to come up with what I think will be a better solution and a better outcome for not only the people that will buy into Newport Quays and live there but also the people of Port Adelaide and visitors to the area."
