Leaders fight against electorate changes

Posted September 24, 2008 13:30:00

South-west Western Australia civic leaders have used a public hearing to again oppose any attempt to shift their electorates into the seat of Kalgoorlie.

Under proposed electoral boundary changes, the Manjimup Shire would be relocated to the federal seat of Kalgoorlie.

The Australian Electoral Commission has proposed shifting Greenbushes and Manjimup out of the seat of Forrest and into Kalgoorlie which would be renamed O'Connor.

The commission held a meeting in Manjimup on Monday which was attended by only four people, including Manjimup Shire president Wade de Campo.

Mr De Campo says Collie, Boddington and possibly Harvey should be relocated because they have more in common with Kalgoorlie.

"For no other reason than they have big mining we don't have any mining here you know we have 85 percent forested area which is similar to Nannup and similar to the areas of Margaret River," he said.

Bunbury Mayor David Smith also attended the inquiry and expressed his opposition to having Collie removed from the seat of Forrest.
