Tasmania's Director of Public Health Dr Roscoe Taylor has confirmed there was a flu outbreak at two Southern Tasmanian aged care homes this winter.

One patient died from the flu, but the problem has now been contained.

The Director of Public of Health would not reveal which nursing homes were affected by the flu outbreak, but says they were both on Hobart's eastern shore.

He says it's not unusual for many elderly patients to be struck down with the flu over the winter months.

Dr Taylor says one elderly patient died, and many others were affected.

He says the homes worked very closely with the Health Department to contain the outbreak and were not accepting new patients at the time.

He has now declared the outbreaks over, because the last new diagnosed case, was more than seven days ago.
