Rain helps boost wheat crop prospects

Posted September 24, 2008 14:00:00

The Department of Primary Industry says two days of rain in the region has virtually assured a large wheat crop.

Several centres, including Tamworth, Nundle, Boggabri and Narrabri, have received more than 40 millimetres, while centres such as Gunnedah and Breeza received more than 30.

The technical specialist for the northern farming systems, John Kneipp, says the rain almost guarantees a large wheat harvest.

"This is extremely beneficial. It's certainly not all over. This will set some pretty handy yield potentials for crops in the region and we could probably do with a late fall of rain, say this time next month would really top things off," he said.
