NSW flu cases plummet

Posted September 25, 2008 12:30:00

The New South Wales Government says the rate of respiratory illnesses plummeted over winter because more people took the flu vaccine this year.

Health Minister John Della Bosca says 8,000 fewer people visited NSW hospital emergency departments to be treated for influenza viruses compared to last year.

Mr Della Bosca says those who are vulnerable to getting the flu should consider getting vaccinated.

"There have been] more than 890,000 doses of influenza vaccine through general practitioners, nursing homes, community health services, justice health and other outlets," he said.

"This led to a much better health outcome for a very wide range of patients and less stress on our emergency departments."
