A exhibition of the top entries in Australia's second most lucrative art award, The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, has opened at the National Archives in Canberra.

The display showcases over 30 sculptures, paintings and drawings from across the country that feature flora and fauna.

Michael McWilliams from Tasmania took out the $50,000 first prize, beating more than 600 entries.

"I was shocked, absolutely shocked, I had no idea really," Mr McWilliams said.

"My legs went wobbly, I found it a bit difficult to talk... great thrill."

The exhibition opens on September 26 and runs until November 16.
