Redfern gang rapist loses appeal

Posted September 26, 2008 11:23:00

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal by a man convicted of taking part in a gang rape with up to 19 other men in inner Sydney three years ago.

Sela Qoro, 45, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for raping a 20-year-old woman at Redfern in November 2005.

At his sentencing, the judge said Qoro and the other 10 to 20 men who had taken part in the attack had not treated the victim as a human being.

The Supreme Court today rejected Qoro's arguments that his psychiatric condition and mental capacity had not been taken into account and that the jury had been prejudiced by non-admissible evidence.
