Authorities in Canada are on alert as Hurricane Kyle approaches the country's Maritime provinces.

A hurricane watch has been issued for Nova Scotia as well as parts of coastal Maine.

Hurricane Kyle has been gaining in intensity and is bearing down on the area with 140 kilometre an hour winds.

It is also expected to bring as much as 150 millimetres of rain.

Emergency officials say people can expect a dramatic impact on residential areas with damaging waves, downed trees and power lines and flooding.

When Kyle hits the Maritimes, it will be five years to the day since Hurricane Juan ravaged the region, killing two people and causing $100 million in damage.
