Benefits seen in pineapple levy

A Yeppoon pineapple farm says the pineapple levy will help the industry be better represented.

Growers throughout the country have until next month to lodge a submission on the proposal which funds research and development, promotion of fresh fruit and membership.

Valley syndicate pineapple grower Mick Cranny says the levy will not help them get better prices for fresh fruit, but it may improve prices for processing fruit.

"If we could bargain as an industry, I think we could probably do a little bit better," he said.

"I think that's not likely, and I don't think an industry levy group could do that from a fresh fruit point of view because it's a day-by-day market.

"But they might well be able to negotiate a price with the processor."
