Defence to clean up Belconnen site

Posted September 30, 2008 19:29:00

The Defence Department has committed to fully funding the clean-up of contaminated land at the former naval transmission station in north Canberra.

The Belconnen site was decommissioned in 2005 and has significant heritage and environmental value.

A recent report recommended that soils on the site contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, lead and fuels be removed.

It also raised concerns that heavy metals may have leached into Lake Ginninderra.

Defence says its testing of Ginninderra Creek early this year found no evidence of contamination.

It says the clean-up of the site will take into account potential risks to health and the environment.

The department is yet to make a decision on where it will dispose the contaminated materials from the site.
