India, France sign nuclear deal

Posted October 1, 2008 09:49:00

India and France have signed a nuclear cooperation agreement, which will allow the sale of civilian nuclear technology to Delhi.

The agreement marks a key step in India's bid to boost its nuclear program.

It currently has 22 reactors, but faces a critical shortage of energy to supply the economy.

The deal, struck in Paris, covers research as well as opening the way for France to supply nuclear reactors.

Its origins date back to January, when President Nicolas Sarkozy visited India and a draft agreement was drawn up.

The French nuclear giant Areva said it hopes to negotiate the sale of two third generation reactors, as well as nuclear fuel.
