Volunteers praised in missing boy search

Posted October 1, 2008 12:04:00

Police say they are grateful for the volunteers who helped find a six-year-old boy missing for 12 hours overnight near Innamincka in the State's far north-east.

The boy, from Alice Springs, was treated for hypothermia after being found this morning about three kilometres from the campsite where he was staying with his family.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service says plans to fly the boy to Broken Hill were cancelled after an assessment by medical staff who flew from Moomba.

Mark Syrus from the Port Augusta Police coordinated the search and says the local community really banded together to help find the boy.

"It could have been a very disastrous result but at the end of the day he was found and it was a fantastic outcome, people up there really banded together, really helping the parents," he said.

"The local park ranger did a fantastic job coordinating people because there's no police presence there, police have to come from Leigh Creek, which is a 5-6 hour drive."
