The Great Barrier Reef off the Queensland coast has become the first marine park in the world to feature on Google Maps.

The collection of maps and satellite images is believed to be the first of its kind in the world.

The technology available on Google's map site allows users to locate islands, reefs, cays and rocks on the Great Barrier Reef with the click of a computer mouse.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority chairman Russel Reichelt says the system provides a bird's eye view of the area.

"You can see coral and patch reefs and you can see a lot of detail," he said.

"The colours are there, the beautiful turquoise blue and so on."

He hopes it is only a matter of time before the current still images are streamed in real time.
