The New South Wales far south coast has been identified as a possible site for an electricity generation project based on wave power.

Work done by engineering consultants RPS Met Ocean for the Western Australian power development company, Carnegie, says the waters off Eden are ideal for a new concept wave farm.

The latest developments allow generators to operate in water depths of less than 25 metres.

Carnegie's managing director Mike Ottaviano says he has got the figures to back up the concept.

"What we have done at Eden is in fact is just taken the real data ... there's a wave rider buoy at Eden that's been measuring data there for years," he said.

"RPS has simply gone back to the data that's there and what that shows is you've got a reliability of resource at Eden of about 92 per cent."
