Bega Mayor wins fourth term

Posted October 1, 2008 14:11:00

The mayoral picture around south-east New South Wales councils is now complete.

Cobargo dairy farmer Tony Allen won the Bega Valley Shire's mayoral chain yesterday in a 6-3 vote, making it his fourth consecutive term in the top job.

The only other contender was Greens' councillor Keith Hughes while Merimbula solicitor Mike Britten was unopposed as deputy mayor.

Councillor Allen says there will be a number of items up for early discussion, including the Woolworths' development at Bega and the site for the 'super tip' at Wolumla.

But he sees commercial development at Merimbula weighing heavily on council's time and says he still has not given up on plans to have a traffic bypass built at Merimbula.

"There'll be a lot of discussions I'm sure among the new councillors on how Merimbula is to be evolve into the future," he said.

"I'm very, very confident that we'll get some good outcomes for Merimbula.

"The big issue is the traffic issue and I'm hoping that as the new council settles, of having some discussions with the federal bodies in relation to obtaining some funds for a proposed bypass."
