US envoy arrives in N Korea for nuclear talks

Posted October 1, 2008 19:14:00

The United States' chief negotiator with North Korea has travelled to the country to propose a compromise deal on its nuclear disarmament program.

Last month North Korea banned UN inspectors from its Yongbyon nuclear reactor and threatened to restart the plant.

US envoy Christopher Hill says he will urge North Korea to accept a system that would allow the US to verify statements Pyongyang makes about its nuclear program.

It is believed North Korea backed out of the deal because the US has not removed it from a list of states that sponsor terrorism.
