Irrigators plea for Vic Govt aid

Posted October 2, 2008 10:04:00

Drought affected irrigators say they desperately need Victorian Government assistance, after only a small amount of September rain.

Victorian Murray irrigators have only 13 per cent of their water entitlement and Goulburn system farmers have 9 per cent.

The South Australian Government is helping its irrigators by buying water on the temporary market.

But the Victorian Farmers Federation's Richard Anderson says water bill rebates would be more effective.

"We'd be encouraging the Government to continue with the water rebates, I think that's a decision on that's almost imminent, we had the rate subsidies ... and I think that's a better option than having a government enter the market and buy water on behalf of the irrigators," he said.
