Scientists successfully transplant frozen pig liver

Posted October 2, 2008 10:35:00

The successful thawing and transplantation of a frozen pig liver could bring the technique one step closer for humans.

Israeli scientists have told New Scientist magazine they have used a slow freezing method which preserved the organ without damaging it.

They believe a bank of frozen organs, ready for transplant, is possible but a UK expert says more work will be needed to prove the method is safe.

Organ donation schemes have to work fast to match organs with patients who need them because they can become unusable within 24 hours.
