An RAAF team has arrived in Papua New Guinea to search for the remains of four airmen shot down during World War II in New Britain.

The team of nine, including two forensic specialists, will leave Port Moresby tomorrow for New Britain on operation Kovi Moses.

They will spend seven days at the crash site of the Hudson bomber, searching for remains of four airmen shot down during a sortie on Japanese ships in 1942.

Squadron Commander John Cotterell says if any remains are found, the forensic team will transport them to the Australian High Commission.

"From there they [would] be buried at Bita Paka near Rabaul at some stage in the future," he said.

It is the second visit by the RAAF to New Britain in an attempt to recover remains of aircrew lost during the war.
