A new exhibition featuring the work of one of the nations most famous abstract artists, the late Grace Crowley, has opened at the Tasmanian Museum and Art gallery.

Fifty four oil paintings and drawings are on display, ranging from portraits to abstract nudes.

Born in 1890, Ms Crowley's works are based on cubist principles she picked up while studying in Paris.

Most of her paintings date from the late 1940s.

The travelling exhibition has gone on display in most capital cities, with Hobart the last stop.

The Museum's Peter West expects the exhibition to draw large crowds.

"Exhibitions of these types are really, really important because they allow Tasmanians to get a better understanding of art and where art has come from and to see great Australian artists like Grace," said Mr West.

The exhibition is open until the 23rd of November.
