600kg of fruit seized in Sunraysia fruit fly prevention

Posted October 3, 2008 08:41:00

Authorities say they have seized more than 600 kilograms of fruit and vegetables from cars in the Sunraysia region this year.

The Murray Valley Citrus Board says about 4,500 cars have been searched for fruit at Mildura and Kerang this year.

The board's John Tesoriero says more work is needed to ensure the region retains its fruit fly-free status.

"We've been very good in greater Sunraysia area, the pest-free area, where we've gone something like 17 months without a single fly detection," he said.

"So something's working, the roadblocks are working, the communication's working, but we've still got people wanting to try their luck."
