Report pushes for standardised Mildura rail line

Posted October 3, 2008 08:45:00

A new report seeks to renew pressure on the Victorian Government to standardise the Mildura railway line.

Crews have completed about half of a $73 million upgrade of the line between Mildura and Geelong.

The project aims to cut travel times for trains using the broad gauge track.

But a report for the Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board being presented today finds that standardising the line would provide greater long-term benefits.

The board says the report has found a failure to change the line to standard gauge will result in dire road safety and environmental and economic consequences.

The report says that would include an extra 91,000 trucks travelling to Melbourne each year and cost Victoria's economy $100 million.
