More hearings set for Torres Strait seas claim

Posted October 3, 2008 12:11:00

The Federal Court hearing on the Torres Strait regional seas claim, in far north Queensland, will resume on local islands later this month.

Lawyers for claimants Leo Akiba and George Mye, on behalf of the people of the Torres Strait, as well as counsel for the state and federal governments, made their opening statements before Justice Paul Finn in Brisbane this week.

As well as hearings in the Torres Strait, the court will sit in Cairns several times.

There will also be more hearings in the new year.
