Indigenous group to maintain Traveston fight

Posted October 3, 2008 12:15:00

A Sunshine Coast Indigenous group is vowing to continue its fight to stop the construction of the Traveston Crossing dam near Gympie, in south-east Queensland, after losing a court battle this week.

The Gubbi Gubbi people launched Federal Court action against an Indigenous land use agreement, but the court has rejected the challenge.

Gubbi Gubbi elder Dr Eve Fesl is outraged, but says the fight is not over.

"We're going to fight this till the end. This Government is allowing our countryside to be raped," she said.

"They're allowing bauxite research into an area that Steve Irwin set aside for the natural environment.

"They're doing this all around the place and now they want to dam the Mary River.

"They want to send the lungfish and the Mary River turtle and other species to extinction."
