Irrigators threaten to boycott water charges

Posted October 3, 2008 13:17:00

Water users in the southern Riverina, in southern New South Wales, are threatening to refuse to pay fixed water charges to the State Government.

There have been numerous appeals for the state to waive the fees from irrigators who have not had a water allocation for two years.

Ted Hatty from the Southern Riverina Irrigators group says they are facing failed winter crops and the prospect of no summer crop, without Government relief.

"Members are very angry that the State Government are refusing to give us some assistance, particularly with the recent announcement by the Government saying that they're going to announce $30 million for a motor racing complex in Sydney and other aid packages they're offering to Sydney-based entertainment areas," he said.

"Surely they could find the $5.5 million roughly to waive our fixed charges."
