Illegal strawberry pickers to be deported

Posted October 3, 2008 17:17:00

The Federal Government says 15 people will be deported from Australia after being found working illegally at a market garden, north of Perth.

The 11 men and four women had entered Australia on tourist visas, but were discovered by immigration officers yesterday picking strawberries at a property in Carabooda.

They've been taken to an immigration detention centre until they're deported.

The Immigration Minister Chris Evans says immigration officers are also investigating whether their employer will be prosecuted.

"It's our intention to ensure employers don't employ people under these conditions." he said.

"They can check to ensure their workers are legal, and I'm very keen to prosecute employers if they're deliberately employing unlawful labour."
