Drought tightens grip on north east

Posted October 3, 2008 20:49:00

Farmers in north-east Tasmania say the drought is worsening and the dry conditions have forced them to ask for feed.

Today the Aussie Helpers group extended a statewide fodder drive, giving donated hay to farmers near Avoca in the Fingal Valley.

One farmer, Guy Marshall, says he's lost up to 300 sheep and has had to sell two properties.

"It's terrible, we're going into spring, we've got absolutely no feed, we've got dust storms, sand drifts, ewes that are in the worst condition they've ever been in because this is our third or fourth year now, wool cuts are down, lambing percentages are crap yeah its just its not good," he said.
