An Adelaide taxi driver has had his cab stolen by a passenger.

The theft happened about 4:00am on Saturday on North Terrace in the city.

Police say the driver got out of his car to talk to a pedestrian under the Morphett Street bridge, when the passenger jumped in the driver's seat and sped off.

The taxi was found 15 minutes later crashed into fences on Nilpena Avenue in Park Holme.

The thief ran off and a search with a police dog failed to find the man.
