UK hostage freed in Nigeria

Posted October 4, 2008 22:07:00

Authorities in Nigeria say a British national kidnapped this month in the southern oil hub of Port Harcourt has been freed.

A military spokesman says David Melford was released by his captors and no ransom was paid.

A British Foreign office spokeswoman in London confirmed the release, saying Mr Melford was "safe and well".

Armed militants have carried out a spate of kidnappings in Nigeria's oil-rich south, often targeting expatriate oil workers.
