The new Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, begins her visit to the regions of the Murray-Darling Basin today.

It will be her first official tour since being sworn in.

Over the next few weeks, Ms Bryce will visit towns across the basin, starting her tour in New South Wales.

Ms Bryce says she is using the tour to learn more about the management and sustainable use of water, land and other resources in the Murray-Darling.

She will land in Bourke today, before travelling to Broken Hill and the Menindee Lakes.

By the middle of the week Ms Bryce will be in Mildura in Victoria, before touring the Lower Lakes in South Australia and then finishing in Adelaide.

She will begin the second part of her regional visit on October 20, travelling from Albury Wodonga to Deniliquin, before returning to Sydney.
