US expert will enhance school debate, says Gillard

Posted October 5, 2008 13:02:00

The Federal Education Minister has denied she is bringing a United States expert to Australia to convince the states to sign-up to a new schools reporting system.

Julia Gillard has announced the head of the New York City Education Department, Joel Klein, will visit Australia next month.

He inspired the Federal Government's plan to tie school funding to teacher and student performance, which is unpopular with unions and some state governments.

Ms Gillard told Channel Nine Mr Klein will bring a new perspective.

"I believe convincing education ministers and teachers generally this is the right approach in this country is my job," she said.

"But I believe having Joel Klein here talking about his experience will add another dimension to that debate."
