A search for two canoeists missing in the Snowy Mountains in southern New South Wales has started.

Concerns about the weather forecast delayed the start of today's search for a 25-year-old Jindabyne man and a 17-year-old boy from Wahroonga in Sydney.

The pair left Bullocks Flat yesterday to canoe 15 kilometres along the Thredbo River to Waste Point.

They failed failed to return late last night. Both are inexperienced canoeists and have limited supplies.

A helicopter is now searching inaccessible areas along the river and ground crews will also join the search.
