Weekend rain no relief for crops

Rain across the Mallee and Wimmera at the weekend is not expected to impact on crop yields in the north-west Victorian region.
In most parts, falls were limited to between two and eight millimetres.
Ouyen-based agronomist Grant Gibbins says while the rain was welcome after a record dry September, there was not enough to boost returns.
Mr Gibbins says there is a big variation in crops across the region, with some barely good enough to harvest, while others could yield as much as two tonnes per hectare.
"Probably [for] some of the barley crops, it is getting a bit late, they are starting to fill, well and truly," he said.
"The wheat crops, it probably just helps keep them a bit fresher, and hopefully gets the grain filling process started."
