Darwin Council calls for pre-cyclone clean-up

Posted October 6, 2008 10:00:00

Darwin City Council wants householders outside of the northern suburbs to scour their yards for junk that could become airborne debris during a cyclone.

Council's cyclone clean-up in the northern suburbs on the weekend removed tonnes of unwanted goods from backyards.

Council workers say they picked up everything from old exercise bikes to office chairs and tonnes of discarded renovation materials.

Acting Lord Mayor Kerry Moir says council trucks will be on the streets doing another clean-up in Darwin city and suburban streets in a fortnight.

"'I've certainly seen plenty of yards where people need to pay some attention, and get some of that gear out of the yard and on to the verge and to the dump so it can't be a missile, so I'm urging people to get behind it and put their rubbish out so we can take it away for them," he said.

"Anything in a cyclone can become a missile. And certainly in 1974, and the small cyclones we've had since then, the wind will pick up anything.

"It can not only damage your house but also your neighbours' houses, and people can be killed by flying corrugated iron or whatever, so it's really important."
