Costa urges irrigators to pay water charges

Posted October 6, 2008 12:34:00

The New South Wales Water Minister has warned rebel irrigators to pay fixed water charges or face a penalty.

Phillip Costa says he is visiting the region on Thursday and is happy to meet Southern Riverina Irrigators who have voted to refuse to pay the charges.

Mr Costa says he feels for irrigators facing their third season without water.

He says the Government has poured $400 million into drought relief, but it still needed the income from irrigators for water management activities.

'I'm very sympathetic to the plight," he said.

"We understand that there is a drought and we understand that people are doing it tough.

"But people still need to pay their licences.

"There's a lot of work going on whether or not we're in a drought or not and I guess sometimes people don't understand that."
