Wild storms disrupt G-G's tour

Posted October 6, 2008 13:00:00

Wild storms have disrupted Governor-General Quentin Bryce's visit to Bourke, in New South Wales' far west.

Ms Bryce arrived in the town yesterday on the first leg of a 10-day tour of the Murray Darling Basin.

Severe storms have lashed the region, dumping heavy rain and damaging part of a school.

Bourke Council general manager Geoff Wise says it has forced Her Excellency to cancel a planned visit to Prattenville Irrigation.

"Even though it was a bitumen road to the front gate, the property's totally inaccessible, so the property visit has been replaced," he said.

"We're aiming to get a couple of rural people in to talk to her in town.

"Her Excellency is also planning to do an additional couple of trips around town, looking at the damage, but also looking at the river and different things."

The offical tour is Ms Bryce's first since being sworn in.
