Care assessors to monitor nursing home

Posted October 6, 2008 13:21:00

Care assessors have been ordered to attend a nursing home in the New England region which failed to comply with Federal Government standards.

A review found the residents of Glenwood Gardens in Glen Innes were being exposed to serious risks, including poor pain management and inadequate nutrition.

The Department of Health and Aging has put sanctions on the nursing home until April next year.

The Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot, says care assessors will be on-site daily.

"There will also be the appointment of a specialist nurse adviser for six months whilst the home is under sanction," she said.

Other requirements include the training of staff in a range of clinical care.

Ms Elliot says the review was ordered because of a possible gastroenteritis outbreak in August.

"Since that time, the agency and the Department of Health and Ageing have been monitoring Glenwood Gardens very, very closely," she said.
