Decision on controversial artwork postponed

Posted October 7, 2008 05:43:00

A Hobart City Council committee has deferred making a decision on a controversial structure proposed for Blinking Billy Point at Lower Sandy Bay.

It is understood a supporter of the 10 metre high sculpture, said to symbolise a lighthouse and aboriginal camp fire was unable to make a representation to the committee.

The matter will be listed for discussion at the next meeting of the Development and Environmental Services committee on October the 20th.

Resident Barry Turnbull says there is overwhelming opposition to the $300,000 sculpture.

"We spoke to many people on the foreshore about the proposal and 99-point-nine per cent of the people said it was just not necessary," Mr Turnbull said.

"They just wanted to area left as it was, just natural," he said.
