Councils get say on infrastructure

Posted October 7, 2008 09:23:00

The general manager of the Broken Hill City Council says next month's meeting of the Australian Council of Local Government will help local communities have a greater say about infrastructure priorities.

Frank Zaknich and the council's administrator, Ken Boyle, will attend the meeting in Canberra, along with representatives from every Australian council.

The meeting will pick a group of 25 representatives, to act as a body to represent the third tier of government.

Mr Zaknich says this will help to give councils as a whole, a better chance to have their say.

"In terms of whether you're a council in regional or metropolitan Australia, there will be differences in terms of priorities, but overall I think we'd all agree that infrastructure renewal and maintenance for communities is probably one of the biggest priorities and a lack of funding so far allocated to local government for that purpose," he said.
