Irrigation water price down 20pc

Posted October 7, 2008 10:01:00

The price of irrigation water has plunged 20 per cent in the past week.

Water brokers say the recent broad range of prices has settled, with almost all trades now occurring just under $400 a megalitre.

Last month's average price in the southern Murray-Darling Basin was about $525 and prices at the same time last year were about $1,200.

Lower Murray Water's Owen Russell says it is some good news for irrigators considering buying.

"We do anticipate our customers will be looking at transferring water soon because their carryover entitlements would have just about been expended and also with allocations remaining quite low they will be looking for a bit more water," he said.
