Kiosk reopening may be a year away

Posted October 7, 2008 10:23:00

It could be another year until renovations are finished on the public kiosk and sea rescue base at Port Macquarie's Town Beach.

The local council closed the busy kiosk 18 months ago for a $1 million redevelopment of the beach-front complex.

The council's Steve Finlay says unfortunately the project has been plagued by planning delays.

He says in the meantime a mobile van will provide refreshments at the beach during summer, similar to last year.

"The kiosk won't be open again this summer, we are still dealing with some of the planning issues with the old kiosk and new cafe we plan putting in there," he said.

"At the moment we've still got probably a little while to go before we get those issues resolved, and we'll have a mobile van down there this Christmas holidays."

The council's Steve Finlay says it is not the result the council and community had hoped for.

"We're disappointed, the public is disappointed, I am sure the visitors are very disappointed. It's something we had hoped to have completed by Christmas last year, but now another year's gone by and still we aren't there," he said.

"Simply the planning issues take a while to get resolved, there are a number of issues to look through."
